By far, the most highly anticipated economic news over the past week was the employment report released on Friday. There were few surprises in the results, however, and mortgage rates ended the week with little change.

For the second straight month, the key labor market report deviated very little from expected levels. The economy added 173,000 jobs in August, below the consensus of 220,000, but upward revisions to prior months added another 44,000. The unemployment rate declined from 5.3% to 5.1%, the lowest level since April 2008. Average hourly earnings, an indicator of wage growth, were 2.2% higher than a year ago.
